Rwanda’s capital market community honours victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

Rwanda’s capital market community visited Kamonyi Genocide Memorial Site to honour victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and stand in solidarity with survivors.

The commemoration brought together officials from the Capital Market Authority of Rwanda (CMA), the Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE), capital market stakeholders, leaders from different institutions, and families of Genocide survivors in Kamonyi District.

During the event, Speciose Mukarugambwa, a Genocide survivor from Kamonyi, shared her testimony, recounting the painful experiences endured by survivors during the Genocide. She also commended President Paul Kagame for his leadership in stopping the Genocide and guiding the country through recovery and reconstruction.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Capital Market Authority, Romeo Ngarambe said Kwibuka should not be seen as a routine commemoration, but as a solemn responsibility to remember Rwanda’s history, honour the victims, and renew the collective commitment to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.

“We are here to remember our loved ones whose lives were taken, to honour them, and to renew our commitment that their memory and legacy will never be forgotten,” CEO Ngarambe said.

He noted that remembrance must go beyond words and be reflected in practical acts of support for Genocide survivors, particularly families that still need assistance in their daily lives.

“You are not alone. We remember you, we think of you, and we will continue to stand with you,” he said.

Ngarambe added that the capital market community has a role to play in Rwanda’s development, but stressed that meaningful development must be built on unity, peace, truth, humanity, and a shared commitment to a better future.
