Students advised to invest in Rwanda's capital market

Rwanda’s Capital Market Authority (CMA) stressed to University of Kigali (UoK) students that “Capital markets is a saving and investment destination for everyone – institutional and individual investors” this was revealed on October 5th 2018 in the annual week-long World Investor Week 2018.

CMA joined the rest of the world on October 1st 2018 to celebrate the 2018 World Investor Week which involves a week of activities carried out by CMA to guide current and future investors to help them make informed financial decisions.

The International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) prepared the second annual World Investor Week (WIW) from October 1st – 7th, 2018 to promote investor education and protection and highlighting the various initiatives of securities regulators in those two areas around the globe.

Ending the annual World Investor Week on October 5th 2018 at the University of Kigali where over 120 students were in attendance. CMA emphasized the importance of Capital Markets as a channel for saving and investment, the Importance of introducing the youth to the capital market and the culture of saving while they are still at the university as well as the importance to interest them to the industry as future professionals.

The CMA’s Public Relations Officer, Magnifique Migisha noted that “Capital markets is a saving and investment destination for everyone – institutional and individual investors.”

He added that the key objective of the World Investor Week is to highlight the importance of investor education and protection, and to foster learning opportunities for investors, given today’s rapidly changing environment of online and technological innovations.

Prof. Singh Narayan, Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics and Dean, Faculty of Business Management and Economics at the University of Kigali said that “This engagement was very important for both students and faculty members for it was a chance to get first-hand information about the capital markets; ways to save and invest and the kind of protection that one is provided after investing his/her money in the capital markets.”

Throughout the 2018 World Investor Week, CMA has engaged with retail/individual investors across the country. In addition to that, CMA also educated investors on various investment products on the capital market through social media and broadcast media.

CMA has committed to carry out a number of public education activities, meant to bridge the financial literacy gap targeting retail investors in Rwanda to facilitate an interactive and educative forum to enable investors to start saving and investing through local capital market, this will be an ongoing task after the World Investor Week.
