Rwanda’s Capital Market University Challenge instills savings culture among youth

As part of the public education and awareness campaigns, the Rwanda’s Capital Market Authority (CMA) organises annual Capital Market University Challenge. The competition is aimed at exposing university students to the capital market industry while instilling in them the culture of saving and investment as future professionals and investors.

The 4th edition of the Capital Market University Challenge covered 21 universities and other higher institutions of learning across the country covering more than 300 students.

The Challenge was conducted as part of public education and awareness aimed at inculcating in the youth in universities the culture of saving and investment in general and through capital market in particular. The University Challenge started in 2012 targeting undergraduate students in all universities and other higher learning institutions in Rwanda.

Activities in the competition this year included two categories namely Quiz to test students’ knowledge on the capital market industry and Essay writing on the theme of “Growing the youth through capital market”.

This year the challenge was carried out by the Capital Market Authority (CMA) in collaboration with the Rwanda Stock Exchange (RSE), Economic Policy Research Network (EPRN) and the international Association Students in Economic and Commercial Science (AISSEC).

The Executive Director of Capital Market Authority, Robert Mathu noted that “The objective of the Capital Market University Challenge is to create awareness and increase knowledge among university students about the capital market and financial sector as a whole.”
The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM) declared winners of the Capital Market University Challenge 2017 at the Kigali Serena Hotel. The winners both in quiz and essay categories were awarded Rwf 3 million to buy shares in any listed company of their choice.
Mathilde Murebwayire who scooped Rwf100, 000 in essay writing from College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM), said that Capital Market Challenge University helped her to get more knowledge about the culture of saving.


This is the fourth edition of the Capital Market University Challenge which started in 2012 targeting undergraduate students in all universities and other higher learning institutions in Rwanda.
